Sardines and Semiconductors

Sardines and Semiconductors is a new composition for concert band by Mark Irons. This piece pays homage to this city of Shenzhen, China which is considered by many to be the “Silicone Valley of the East.” Once a sleepy fishing village, this city’s transformation into a global technology powerhouse is remarkable. In Sardines and Semiconductors, Mark Irons first evokes the “sleepy fishing village” tone marked by a beautiful Piccolo and Flute Duet. Further into the piece you can hear the change in pace and style accented with a driving 4/4 and 3/8 time signature. By the end of the song you hear echos of the past blended with the new power of today. This piece will be fun for you to conduct and a blast for your students to play!
